  • Video Replay To Help Referees With Penalty Kick, Offside Decisions On FIFA Rules Agenda

    FIFA said that the use of video replay in football "will by studied by its rules-making panel next month," according to the AP. The "potentially radical use of technology to help referees is on the agenda despite long being ruled out by FIFA President Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini." FIFA said that "no decision will be made" on March 1 by the Int'l Football Association Board group. Still, the preliminary talks "appear to confirm Platini's warning that approving goal-line technology in 2012 could lead to using video for penalty kicks and offsides" (AP, 2/3).

  • Major League Soccer To Organize World Cup Warm-Up Matches

    Major League Soccer will organize a "Road to Brazil" series of int'l tune-up matches head of the World Cup in Brazil. The participants will include Spain, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece and Honduras. The matches will take place between May 27 and June 10 and will be organized by Soccer United Marketing, the league's commercial arm (MLS). FOOTBALL ESPANA reported Spain will play matches against Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece and Honduras. Spain begins its World Cup Group B campaign "with a game against the Netherlands on June 13 in Salvador" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 2/4).

    ManU announced that its '14 preseason tour will take place in the U.S. The team will visit a number of destinations in the country as it looks to prepare for the '14-15 season. Full details of the preseason tour will be announced in the coming weeks (ManU). ... The Union of Central American Football (UNCAF) announced plans on Tuesday to move the Copa Centroamericana to the U.S. The venue selection is ongoing with the site or sites for the tournament announced at a later date. UNCAF's decision to move the tournament to the U.S. and schedule it during the September int'l window is an attempt to create a more competitive tournament (UNCAF).
