Adidas Contract With Bayern Munich Player Forbade Scientology Membership

Football players who have a contract with adidas "are not allowed to be members of Scientology and spread the philosophy of its Founder L. Ron Hubbard," according to DER SPIEGEL. The information "comes from a kit deal that adidas signed with a current German national team and Bayern Munich player in '08." The player had to attest that "he is not a member of any organization or association that represents the principles of L. Ron Hubbard or uses and distributes corresponding techniques." In the same paragraph, adidas also required that the player "is not a member of any organization or association that is monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution." If either had been the case, adidas "would have had the right to immediately terminate the contract," which ran until June 30, 2012. Adidas also would have had the right to terminate the contract if the player "had failed a doping test or was sentenced by a court for drug possession, drug consumption or drug trafficking." The unnamed Bayern Munich player received €400,000 for the kit deal during the '11-12 season (DER SPIEGEL, 2/2).
