Club From Ecuadorean Village Of Chibuleo Qualifies For Promotion To Ecuador's Serie A

Ecuadorean football side Mushuc Runa earned promotion to the top division of Ecuadorean football for '14 in November -- "representing a South American wonder: with impeccable financial management, a club created in an agreement between indigenous villages has reached the country's top league," according to Waldemar Iglesias of CLARIN. The club is an "example of organization, fulfilling contracts and respect for foreign workers." The club, based in the village of Chibuleo in Ecuador's Tungurahua, chose a name that means "New Man" in the village's language of Kichwa. In the team's recent annual photograph, "its coach wore a shirt containing the words 'Proud to be indigenous. We were hungry to make history and we did it. It is a pleasure to offer this to this community'" (CLARIN, 12/18).
