Fox Sports Extends U.S., Caribbean Rights For Champions, Europa Leagues Through '17-18

Fox Sports has renewed its UEFA Champions League and Europa League rights in the U.S. and Caribbean through the '17-18 season. Fox will broadcast both tournaments on Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, Fox Deportes, Fox Sports Regional and Fox Soccer Plus. Fox will carry 146 Champions League games annually (Fox). MULTICHANNEL NEWS' Mike Reynolds cited sources as saying the value of the combined deals is in the $150M range. Fox has been the English- and Spanish-language rights-holders for Champions League since the '09-10 season and the Europa League since '12-13. Fox won the rights -- which were divided into separate proposals by language for both properties -- "over two rounds, topping bids from Univision, NBC Sports Group and Telemundo, and BeIN Sports." The renewals "are key moves for Fox." Fox recently acquired rights to Germany’s Bundesliga for five years, beginning with the '15-16 season, and with UEFA for qualifying matches for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Fox’s new Champions and UEFA League "give it a full plate of futbol fare for Fox Sports 1 and Fox Soccer Plus ahead of its coverage of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups" (MULTICHANNEL NEWS, 12/16).
