Event Notes: Left-Wing Local Political Party Opposes Bilbao, Spain As Euro 2020 Host

Left-wing political party EH Bildu, which is based in the Basque Country region of Spain, "has said that it is opposed to Bilbao possibly serving as a host site for Euro 2020." EH Bildu Secretary General Pello Urizar said, "We do not have anything to do with the Spanish national team." Urizar added that "national sports teams have a very important political component and are tools to obscure the national interests of some and strengthen those of others" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 12/14). ... Wales could be a "surprise bidder for the 2026 World Cup in partnership with England and/or other British federations." Cardiff has "already been selected" to host next year's UEFA Super Cup, only the second time it has not been staged in Monaco. Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones said that his country was "keen to use the opportunity to further its credentials" (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 12/13). ... The Dubai Sports Council "will be backing the annual 'Colour Run' to be held at the Dubai Autodrome on Saturday." The event will be organized with "sponsorship from Activelife Insurance Company." The inaugural edition of the event was "joined by millions of people around the world after it was held at the same time in more than 100 cities" (GULF NEWS, 12/15). ... The Int'l Motorcycling Federation "has confirmed the calendar for the 2014 MotoGP season, with a race in South America for the first time in a decade" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 12/16). ... China "will host a record 10 WTA events in the coming season as the global leader in women's professional tennis on Thursday announced the 2015 calendar as well as changes to the 2014 calendar." The WTA's long-term strategy of growing women's tennis in Asia "is built around an expansive footprint in China and the region, as well as Singapore hosting the year-end WTA Championships for a record five years between 2014 and 2018" (XINHUA, 12/13). ... Andretti Sports Marketing has been appointed by Formula E to be the official event organizers for the Miami Formula E race, which will take place on March 14, 2015. Andretti Sports Marketing is a sports, entertainment, event and experiential marketing company that has managed and operated several large-scale urban events around the world (Formula E).
