Winter Sports, Handball Draw High Ratings On Eurosport; Sport1 Airs Handball Bundesliga

Pan-European sports network Eurosport "recorded high ratings for its broadcast of the Nordic skiing events in Kuusamo, Finland over the weekend," according to Uwe Mantel of DWDL. The ski jumping competition attracted 400,000 viewers on Saturday afternoon. The number translated into a market share of 2.5%. In the target demographic 14-49, the event obtained a 1.2% share. On Sunday morning, Nordic Combined was watched by 220,000, which equaled a market share of 2.9%. The cross-country skiing race, which also took place on Sunday morning, attracted 320,000 viewers and had a 3.4% market share (DWDL, 12/2).

HANDBALL: DWDL's Mantel also reported Eurosport and German free-to-air sports channel Sport1 "aired handball games on Sunday afternoon." While Eurosport showed the Champions League games of Kiel and Flensburg, Sport1 aired the Bundesliga game between Melsungen and Rhein-Neckar Löwen at the same time. Eurosport attracted 180,000 viewers to its broadcast of Kiel's victory over Polish side Orlen Wisla Plock. The following game between Flensburg and Danish side Aalborg was watched by 250,000 viewers. The games obtained market shares of 1.3% and 1.5%, respectively. In the target demographic, the victories of both German teams had shares of 0.5% and 0.8%, respectively. The Bundesliga matchup on Sport1 attracted an average of 170,000 viewers and had a 1.1% market share. In the target demographic, the game obtained a 1% share (DWDL, 12/2).
