Safety At Rugby League World Cup Stadiums Questioned After Lewis Injury

Questions "are being asked if the ground made famous" by ManU, Old Trafford, "is safe to host the final of the Rugby League World Cup," according to Paul Crawley of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. In the wake of the injury that ended Australian forward Luke Lewis' campaign, "concerns have been raised over the safety standards of some of the grounds being used in the tournament because of the short in-goal areas and how close they are to the boundary fences." Lewis "was reluctant to make an issue of his injury in regard to safety standards but admitted he doesn't want to see another player suffer a similar fate." Lewis: "I don't really want to comment on it, but I would hate to see anyone in any team or any sport slip over or fall the wrong way and miss out and play in games they really want to play in." Lewis "smashed into an advertising sign that was placed between the dead-ball line and the boundary fence" -- and it is believed "he was knocked unconscious when he hit a metal pole while he dislocated his shoulder in the process" (DAILY TELEGRAPH, 11/4).
