Former Scottish League 1 Rangers Dir Paul Murray Steps Up His Bid To Control Club

Former Scottish League 1 Rangers Dir Paul Murray on Thursday called for Rangers fans to "throw their weight behind him and tycoon Jim McColl as they step up their bid to seize control of the Ibrox club," according to David Gunn of the SCOTSMAN. Murray insisted that he and McColl are the "right men to stabilise the club and has called on what remains of the board to swiftly name the date for what is sure to be a pivotal annual general meeting." The meeting "had been scheduled" for Thursday, but Scottish lawyer Colin Tyre "ruled there was no 'valid reason'" for then-CEO Craig Mather and the Rangers board not to "present the Murrays' motion to the rest of the club's shareholders and granted the interim interdict" (SCOTSMAN, 10/24). In Glasgow, Keith Jackson reported Murray on Wednesday "reacted with dismay to leaks" that the Rangers Annual General Meeting might be "postponed until Christmas." Murray: "Earlier this week three fans’ groups called for clarification on key points. The fans were quite correct to call for an agm to be held as soon as reasonably possible because this uncertainty cannot be allowed to continue. With that in mind, the latest leak about an eight-week delay is hugely disappointing and does nothing to provide the club with the stability it urgently needs" (DAILY RECORD, 10/24). Also in Glasgow, David Love reported former Rangers Owner Craig Whyte on Wednesday claimed he had "become untouchable after his part in the club’s downfall." Whyte told a court that insurance firms "refused to deal with him and would not insure his palatial Highland home, Castle Grant" (DAILY RECORD, 10/24).
