IOC President Thomas Bach has appointed IOC VP John Coates as chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Games for the 2020 Tokyo Games. Frank Fredericks has been named Coordination Commission chairman for the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. Coates and Fredericks will lead two teams of commission members that will be responsible for assisting their respective local organizing committees as they prepare for their editions of the Games (IOC).
Puerto Rican banking exec Richard Carrion, who was "instrumental in building up the financial security of the IOC, has resigned from his key roles in the Olympic body following his failed bid for the presidency." Carrion quit his "different positions within the IOC," including as chairman of the finance commission. He had held that position since '02. Carrion also resigned as the IOC's negotiator of TV rights deals outside Europe, but has "agreed to remain in that role" until the 2014 Sochi Olympics to "assist in the transition process" under new IOC President Thomas Bach (AP, 10/16). ... A Russian expedition carrying a 2014 Sochi Olympic torch "set off on Tuesday for the North Pole, while Russian cosmonauts prepare to take a modified Olympic torch into space next month" (RIA NOVOSTI, 10/16).
