Former England coach STEVE MCCLAREN returned to League Championship Derby County "as the new occupant" of NIGEL COUGH's managerial office on Monday night. McClaren arrived at Pride Park in the afternoon before meeting directors to finalize a three-year contract to succeed Clough, "who was sacked on Saturday evening following a 1-0 defeat at local Championship rivals Nottingham Forest" (LONDON GUARDIAN, 9/30). ... Former English cricketer MIKE GATTING said that he will "concentrate on the redevelopment of Lord's and on forging closer ties with poorer communities when his one-year presidency of the Marylebone Cricket Club" starts Tuesday. The renovation of the London facility "will cost as much" as $323M and includes "underground parking, extending the pavilion and replacing stands to boost capacity by 2,700."
