Study: Tottenham Hotspur Tops Europa League Participants In Number Of Facebook Fans

The 48 teams which will play this season in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League gathered a total of 6,739,100 fans on the official FanPages on Facebook. The most popular team is a member of the Premier League -- Tottenham Hotspur, which at the time of the study had 2,249,731 fans. Second place in the ranking was taken by Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais, which had 843,730 "Likes." Rounding out the top 3 was Turkish club Trabzonspor (526,848 fans). The study of team profiles was conducted as part of the social-media research performed by the tool PentagonSocialTrack.

  • The bottom of the ranking was dominated by clubs from the eastern part of the continent such as Russia, Bulgaria, Moldava and Ukraine, where Facebook is not as popular as in Central Europe.
  • The last place in the ranking of all group-stage participants was held by Kazakh club Shakhtyor Karaganda, whose profile got only 291 "Likes" (Pentagon Research).
