Barcelona Considering Bid For 2022 Olympics Following Madrid's Failed 2020 Bid

Spain "has one look at Buenos Aires and the other in the Pyrenees," according to Celes Piedrabuena of MUNDO DEPORTIVO. The choice of Japan over Madrid for the 2020 Games "was followed very closely by the Barcelona-Pyrenees 2022 Winter Olympic bid." Logic "indicates that choosing Madrid would damage the chances for the Barcelona candidacy, but the third straight rejection for Madrid gives Spanish winter sports a chance at the Olympics." The potential Barcelona bid will decide whether it will apply at the end of the month. After the Games are held in Sochi in '14 and South Korea in '18, the 2022 edition will "likely take place in Europe, and the Barcelona-Pyrenees candidacy is impeccable" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 9/7). In Madrid, MARCA reported Madrid's defeat "leaves Barcelona as the next possible Olympic project in Spain." The 2022 Winter Games have been under consideration in Barcelona since Barcelona Mayor Jordi Hereu announced in '10 "that he intended to make the city a host of a winter Olympics in cooperation with ski resorts in the Pyrenees." The IOC on June 6 opened the period of candidacy presentations for the 2022 Winter Games, with the period scheduled to end Nov. 14 (MARCA, 9/8).
