Event Notes: Bahrain F1 Grand Prix Set To Switch To Night Race In 2014

The Bahrain F1 Grand Prix "is to switch to a night race next year, with the circuit set to confirm the news in the next few days." The Sakhir venue "was considering a Formula 1 night race to celebrate the event's 10th anniversary." It appears that those plans "have moved forward" with circuit Chair Zayed Al Zayani revealing at Monza that "an announcement is imminent" (AUTOSPORT, 9/8). ... The "spectacle offered by X Games Barcelona has left a footprint." The event, which took place from May 16-19, drew more than 115,000 people to Barcelona. Magazine SportsTravel's readers have nominated the event for two of the "prestigious" SportsTravel awards: Best Multidisciplinary Event and Best Sporting Event (EL PERIODICO, 9/6). ... The runners in this year's A$6M ($5.5M) Melbourne Cup "will have 24-hour guards -- a move never before used in Australian racing." The around-the-clock security watch "is one of several tougher measures Racing Victoria integrity officers will have in place this spring" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 9/9).
