Construction Companies Build Quietly On Success Of 2012 London Olympics

Aecom, which designed the master plan for the Olympic Park, has won projects related to its London 2012 work.
Several companies involved in the construction of London's Olympic Park "have won contracts for other big sporting events, despite marketing restrictions around their role in the Games," according to Vanessa Kortekaas of the FINANCIAL TIMES. Aecom, which designed the master plan of the park that helped London win its Olympic bid, said it had since won a “couple of hundred million dollars” in projects directly related to its 2012 London Olympics work. Aecom ''designed the master plan" for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and "is also designing the broadcast centre for the Rio Games." Aecom Buildings CEO Jason Prior said, "In terms of exposure and reputation [from the Games], that’s a whole other kettle of fish which I haven’t tried to put a value on." Atkins "also received a boost" worth more than £70M ($110M) after it was "chosen to oversee the engineering planning" for large infrastructure projects linked to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Make Architects, which designed the handball arena -- or “copper box” -- for the London Games, "has also designed a visitor centre in the park, which is set to open next year." Make Architects partner Stuart Fraser said, "Our Olympic involvement has undoubtedly opened doors for us" (FT, 8/19).
