Proposal To Renovate Barcelona's Camp Nou Could Increase Stadium's Capacity To 104,000

Barcelona's renovation plan would increase Camp Nou capacity to 104,000.
Barcelona officials said that Camp Nou stadium renovation proposals include "a more vertical, closed stadium, with every seat covered from rain and a capacity of 104,000," according to Javier Giraldo of SPORT. The proposal "favors renovating Camp Nou instead of building a new one." The decision makers "already have on the table the details of the proposals, and the most viable is the one that would transform the stadium starting with the lower level, which would lose seats, but become much more vertical." This loss of seats would be compensated for in the third level, which would "grow toward the top and stay balanced: the north goal, south goal, grandstand and opposite side will have the same height and the whole field would remain covered." The proposal's increased capacity of 104,000 would make Camp Nou the second-largest football stadium in the world, trailing only Mexico City's Estadio Azteca. The proposed renovation would increase the stadium's number of VIP boxes, because "that is one of the best sources of income with which the club can expect to get its money's worth." Barcelona will present the options to renovate or build a new stadium at a referendum scheduled to last "the length of the first trimester of '14" (SPORT, 7/2).
