Former Barcelona Presidential Candidate Speaks Out Against Possible New Stadium

A referendum to decide the future of Camp Nou "is not enough," according to Joan Doménich of EL PERIODICO. Agustí Benedito, who ran for the presidency of Barcelona in '10 and finished second behind Barcelona President Sandro Rosell, is demanding presidential elections to make the debate regarding the stadium "much deeper and wider" among Barcelona supporters. Benedito: "I hope they don't take shortcuts or cheat. The remodeling proposal is only a communication strategy. The level of transparency in this government is scarce and not at the level that the club deserves" (EL PERIODICO, 6/20). ... In Madrid, Santi Giménez reported Benedito said, "The referendums are very good, but this is a theme that was not in Rosell's election campaign. Fans did not elect him for this. What I ask for is that he meets his election promises. He did not ask for a new Camp Nou, he planned a remodeling. If he wants to build a new stadium, he should put it in an election campaign, which he can do in '16. The next 10 or 12 presidents will pay for it" (AS, 6/20).
