EPL Newcastle made a "surprise appointment" Sunday by announcing former Manager JOE KINNEAR has signed a three-year deal to become dir of football. Kinnear's role "apparently includes the final say on incoming and outgoing transfers, appeared to undermine the manager's authority at St James' Park" (GUARDIAN, 6/16). ... Former Championship side Bristol City Associate Dir ERNIE ARATHOON has been named to the club's board of directors as a non-exec director (BRISTOL POST, 6/14). ... Hockey Australia named North Melbourne FC COO CAM VALE CEO. He succeeds MARK ANDERSON, who left his post in April (Hockey Australia). ... German public broadcaster SWR, part of ARD's portfolio of channels, has appointed HARALD DIETZ as its new sports director (SWR). ... The Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB) re-elected President LEO WINDTNER "to head the organization for another four years." The 63-year-old "was unanimously re-elected at the federation's annual general meeting." Windtner "ran unoppsed" (KURIER, 6/16). ... German Boxing Association (DBV) President JÜRGEN KYAS "has been comfirmed in his position during the association's general meeting" (SID, 6/15).
