Olympic Notes: Munich City Council Sets Date For Referendum On Possible Olympic Bid

The Munich City Council "has set a date for a public referendum about a possible bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics." The referendum "will take place on Nov. 10," and if successful Munich will bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (SID, 6/5). ... Oslo, Norway "is moving ahead with plans to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics." The city council voted Wednesday "to ask for financial guarantees from the government, a precondition for hosting the Games" (AP, 6/5). ... Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych "has signed a decree on preparations for the holding of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Ukraine in 2022." The committee on submitting a bid to host the competition in Ukraine "is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul" (UKRINFORM, 6/5). ... Pakistan may face suspension from the IOC like neighbor India "due to a conflict between the national Olympic Association and a newly formed interim-committee, backed by the government." The Pakistan Sports Board "has appointed an interim committee to run the POA affairs but Lt. General (retd.) Arif Hasan, who has been heading the POA as president for seven years, claims that the committee is illegal and not recognised by the IOC" (PTI, 6/9).
