CSD President Miguel Cardenal Addresses Various Topics Including Debt In The LFP

Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) President MIGUEL CARDENAL addressed a number of subjects, including the debt many La Liga clubs are facing, at a Europe Press breakfast Thursday, according to the EP. Cardenal said, "The teams are already working to solve the debt issue. La Liga's president has indicated that his goal is for clubs to reduce 10% of their budgets, which has never happened in the history of Spanish football. Spanish football has made the decision to be excellent in the economic aspect and it is not taking this into account. The debt is more than €6.5M ($8.3M). There has not been passivity, the reason for this debt is the active investigation of the Hacienda (Spain's IRS), which has not agreed with the practices that have been brought, and this has led to the debt."

Cardenal also answered questions pertaining to several other issues:

ON OPERATION PUERTO:
"It can take its toll on us. It's a sentencing that has caused much consternation and true embarrassment, with all respect to the judicial authority. There are blood bags of athletes that a doctor treated to improve their performances in an illegal way, and we cannot know who they are. We disagree with this and are going to appeal the sentencing and find out who are the people that are cheating."

ON CLEANING UP CYCLING:
"It is already making changes to adapt the calendar to the cyclists' possibilities. Cycling's agreement is to be an unmistakably clean sport. I have worked a lot with the federation, and I have seen what it is doing."

ON MADRID 2020: "It's what we are working for. Few projects bring together such a majority of our society. It is a very beautiful project from the social and economic point of view to be able to have an interesting contribution."

On football match-fixing: "The concern before was doping, now it is match-fixing. It is a widespread problem that should have been stopped much earlier. I trust in the new direction of the Spanish Football League (LFP), with President JAVIER TEBAS at the head" (EP, 5/16).
