Japanese Football Star To Turn In Tokyo 2020 Bid On Jan. 7
The Tokyo bid committee announced that reigning FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Homare Sawa "will present Tokyo's candidature file for the 2020 Olympics to the IOC next month," according to KYODO. Tokyo Gov. Naoki Inose said, "We must make the bid a success at all costs." Sawa will submit the file on Jan. 7 to the IOC at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, and it will be made public the following day. The file "will detail Tokyo's plan to host the 2020 Games," which would be the city's second Summer Olympics after '64. Tokyo is bidding against Madrid and Istanbul, two cities that have never hosted the Olympics. Tokyo 2020 has recently signed sponsorship deals with Internet firms Yahoo Japan Corp. and Gree Inc., "with the aim of driving up public support for the bid" (KYODO, 12/22).
