Brazilian Grand Prix Receives Strong Ratings Across Europe

German free-to-air TV channel RTL has broken the 10 million viewer mark "for the first time this season" with its broadcast of Sunday's F1 Grand Prix of Brazil," according to Manuel Weis of QUOTEN METER. Starting at 5pm CET, the Cologne-based channel recorded 10.62 million viewers, which equaled a market share of 40.9%. In the target demographic 14-49, the race was watched by 4.32 million viewers or a 44% share. The peak audience of 10.68 million viewers was recorded when the drivers crossed the finish line and Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won his third-consecutive world championship title. In addition, German pay-TV channel Sky set a new viewer record for its broadcast of Sunday's Grand Prix. A total of 610,000 viewers tuned in to watch the "exciting season final." Therefore, F1 beat out Sky's Bundesliga simulcast, which aired at the same time and was watched by only 290,000 viewers. Sky obtained an overall market share of 2.3% and a 2.6% share in the target demographic for its coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix (QUOTEN METER, 11/26).

SPAIN: AS reported that broadcaster Antena 3's showing of the Brazilian Grand Prix was watched by 7.1 million people and a 41.7% share. The numbers make it the second most watched Grand Prix of the F1 calendar behind the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin. The broadcast registered audience peaks of 49% market share, and the "golden minute" occurred at 6:45pm local time when more than 8.5 million viewers were tuned in. The numbers for the '11 edition of the Brazilian Grand Prix were much lower with an audience of 2.7 million and a market share of 18.8% (AS, 11/26).

FRANCE: EUROSPORT reported that TF1's broadcast of the Grand Prix was watched by an audience of 3.7 million people and a market share of 22%. The peak audience reached 5 million viewers. For the entire F1 season, TF1 averaged an audience of 2.8 million viewers and a market share of 24% per Grand Prix (EUROSPORT, 11/26).
