Sponsors Still Confident Of Beijing Marathon, Following Month Postponement

The Beijing Marathon, which has been held every year in October since ’81, was at the last minute postponed to Sunday. Beijing Marathon organizers did not announce on its official website the new date until early November, leaving many participants wondering when the event would be rescheduled. An adidas spokesperson said the race was postponed "due to congress meeting in China." Adidas Greater China VP/Marketing & Sport Performance Jens Meyer said although the race has been delayed, it is still expecting "tens of thousands of runners from China and throughout the world." Meyer added: "It is expected that this year’s event will bring a brand new experience to all participants for its substantial international exposure." Adidas has been an official partner of the race since it signed a sponsorship deal in '10 for five years. Organizers would not disclose financial terms of the deal. Gatorade, in a three-year partnership with the Beijing Marathon, is the official sports drink supplier. Despite the postponement, Gatorade will be served at 17 fueling stations with umbrellas and branded signage. Before the race, the company will provide nutrition and running advice on China's online social media site Weibo. A Gatorade spokesperson said, "We understand that any public event may be adjusted for a variety of reasons. The reschedule information was announced to sponsors in early September, and we look forward to being on course to support the runners fuel and hydration needs." The marathon route begins at Tian’anmen Square and ends at the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium.
