F1 team Ferrari has extended its contract with driver FELIPE MASSA. The Brazilian's seat "had been the subject of much debate" all season, but it had been expected that he would be re-signed after his strong performance in the last two races in Japan and South Korea. Ferrari released the following statement, "Scuderia Ferrari announces that it has renewed its contract with the driver Felipe Massa to the end of the '13 race season. The Scuderia's driver lineup for next year is therefore made up of Fernando Alonso and the aforementioned Felipe Massa" (London GUARDIAN, 10/16). ... German third-tier hockey club EV Füssen "acquired NHL player ERIK CONDRA during the league's lockout." The 26-year-old American, who played for the Ottawa Senators last season, has "signed a 30-day deal for now." Condra has appeared in 114 NHL games and scored 14 goals (SID, 10/16). ... German public broadcaster ARD appointed former Bayern Munich forward GIOVANE ELBER to join its World Cup broadcast team as an expert. The 40-year-old Brazilian will report about his home country and the Brazilian national team during the 2014 World Cup (DWDL.de, 10/16). ... Former Cricket South Africa President NORMAN ARENDSE is "furious at the introduction" of the new clause in the board's Articles of Association, which restricts his return as the CSA chairman. Sources within CSA said that Arendse was set to return as the new chairman of the board. But a late amendment to the CSA Articles "now precludes Arendse" from being elected as a director (PTI, 10/16). ... Former Asian Football Confederation President MOHAMED BIN HAMMAM "has launched a fresh appeal" with the Court of Arbitration for Sports over his FIFA suspension (THE NATIONAL, 10/16). ... Cricketer KEVIN PIETERSEN has arrived in London "for a series of meetings" with his England teammates and officials. England Twenty20 captain STUART BROAD said that he "would be one of the players" to meet the 32-year-old (BBC, 10/16). ... I-League club Mohun Bagan FC Coach SANTOSH KASHYAP, who took on the role at "the beleaguered" club at the beginning of the season, resigned. He took "responsibility for the team's below average performance in the current season" (THE HINDU, 10/14).

ON THE ISLAND...: Former Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association President HOWARD ARIS was inducted into the Order of Jamaica at the National Honours and Awards Investiture ceremony at King's House. Aris was a "noted athlete, coach and administrator," who dedicated more than 40 years toward the development and growth of track and field in Jamaica. Track and field pioneer DENNIS JOHNSON was also honored. Johnson was inducted into the Order of Distinction for his contribution to the development of the sport (JAMAICA-GLEANER.com, 10/16). ... A new marble headstone marking the burial site of track and field legend HERB MCKENLEY "was unveiled by athletes and dignitaries at National Heroes' Park" on Monday during events to mark Jamaica's performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Athletes "laid wreaths at the monuments honouring the seven national heroes:" VERONICA CAMPBELL-BROWN at MARCUS GARVEY's; USAIN BOLT at NORMAN MANLEY's; KERRON STEWART as ALEXANDER BUSTAMANTE's; SAMANTHA ALBERT at NANNY OF THE MAROONS'; ALIA ATKINSON at PAUL BOGLE's; SYLVIA GRANT at GEORGE WILLIAM GORDON's; and MICHAEL FRATER at SAM SHARPE's (JAMAICA OBSERVER, 10/16).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth.
