BBC's iPlayer Strikes Gold With 200 Million Requests In August

The London Games "proved to be digital gold" for the BBC, which received a record-breaking 200 million viewing requests on the iPlayer in August, according to Mark Sweney of the London GUARDIAN. Usage of the BBC iPlayer video-on-demand service in August "broke a slew of records," including most monthly show requests, most requests per week, most users per week and most usage over mobile and tablets. Live viewing "also hit an all-time high," accounting for a third of the 151 million iPlayer requests to watch TV shows in August. The proportion of live vs. recorded TV viewing is typically less than 15% of the total. Overall, there was a record 196 million requests to view TV and radio programs on the iPlayer in August. The Opening Ceremony was "the most watched" event with 3.9 million requests, followed by the Closing Ceremony with 2.11 million (GUARDIAN, 9/27).
