More Than 130,000 Volunteer Applications Received For 2014 World Cup In Brazil

The FIFA volunteer program received 130,919 applications to work the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, according to PORTAL2014.org.br. The number "almost doubles" the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (70,000) and "almost triples" the 2006 World Cup in Germany (48,000). FIFA revealed that 52% (68,040) of applicants were males and 51% (67,449) were individuals between the age of 16 and 25. The two Brazilian states with the most applicants were São Paulo (25%) and Rio de Janiero (18%). Foreign applications accounted for 5% of the total, with Colombia (908 applicants) accounting for the most. The Local Organizing Committee will choose 15,000 volunteers for the World Cup (PORTAL2014.gov.br, 9/24).
