Austrian Hockey League About To Fold After Three Teams Leave

Austrian's second-tier hockey league, Nationalliga, is about to fold after three teams withdrew from the league on Thursday, according to the APA. Only one Austrian club, the EHC Bregenzerwald, is willing to play in the Nationalliga in the upcoming season together with up to six clubs from Slovenia. Three other teams VEU Feldkirch, EHC Lustenau and EK Zell/See withdrew from the league. VEU Feldkirch published a letter to the Austrian Hockey Federation on its homepage, in which it states that a "Nationalliga in its currently planned format with only four Austrian clubs and numerous Slovenian teams, is in terms of competition and economically unappealing" (APA, 6/29).
