Social Media Consumption Of Sports Doubles

Nearly double the number of people are following sports via social media, while satellite or cable viewing "has witnessed a year-on-year fall in consumption levels," according to John Reynolds of BRAND REPUBLIC. A report by digital sports agency Perform into sports consumption revealed 21% of fans "consume sport via social networks," compared to 13% the year previous. Cable or satellite viewing of sport has "nudged down" from 67% to 66%. The drop in cable or satellite viewing comes despite BSkyB "boasting an increasing customer base," which now numbers 10.55 million. The report also found that more than one in three of those polled "agree that they are more likely to have a positive opinion of brands that associate with sports they follow on social platforms" (BRAND REPUBLIC, 6/18).
