TV Contracts, Lambeau Businesses Boost Packers' Record Revenue

The Packers on Friday said that team revenue last year totaled $408.7M, 8.4% more than the prior year's record $377.2M. Revenue has "increased every year since the renovation of Lambeau Field" in '03. The Packers also "reported record profit from operations" of $75M and record net income of $48.9M. Packers President & CEO Mark Murphy "attributed national TV contracts and improvements in Lambeau Field Atrium businesses" as revenue drivers (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 6/25). Murphy: "The consistent success -- has been helpful for us, as well as the popularity of not only the Packers but the league. ... If our revenues were 1 percent lower, we would have been 13th. It's a very tight number of teams right there" (ESPN.com, 6/24).

PGA Tour Cancels Greenbrier Classic Due To West Virginia Flooding

The PGA Tour yesterday canceled the July 7-10 Greenbrier Classic "because of devastating flooding in West Virginia." The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs was "inundated with floodwater after heavy storms rolled into the state Thursday." Tour officials said that Old White TPC "suffered extensive damage and 'is beyond reasonable repair to conduct the tournament.'" This is the first time a PGA Tour event has been canceled since '09 (AP, 6/25). In addition to "loss of life, property damage throughout the area has shut down all of White Sulphur Springs" (Huntington HERALD-DISPATCH, 6/26). The Tour will "return to the Greenbrier next year" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/26).

PGA Tour Exec VP & Chief of Operations Andy Pazder said the Tour spent "some time speaking with Greenbrier officials" about playing the event at another course. But he said, "We did not find any that we felt would be a satisfactory venue, and beyond that the issue really was what was the right thing to do." Pazder said the Tour also looked at its calendar to "see if there were any available dates" in the fall, but was unsuccessful. Pazder: "We're comfortable in knowing we did the right thing here" ("Golf Central," Golf Channel, 6/25).

Katie Ledecky Headlines Sold Out U.S. Swim Trials In Omaha

The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials began today at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, and over 1,700 entrants are competing "for fewer than 60 berths" on the U.S. squad that will compete in Rio. The 14,000-seat arena, "in which two temporary 50-meter pools have been erected, is sold out every day, morning and evening, for the first time" since the trials moved there in '08. There are "larger-than-life likenesses of the top Americans," including Katie Ledecky, on the "outside of the arena." Ledecky said, "It’s just amazing how USA Swimming does a great job of making things bigger and better than the last time, and I’m happy to be a part of it" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/25).

Ledecky is the "face of these Trials," but she "remains an amateur without TV commercial endorsements." She often "ducks the spotlight," but will be the "supernova of this star-studded event, a central figure in NBC’s coverage this week" and in Rio (OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, 6/26). The trials "have grown into a massive, pyrotechnic spectacle" that is known as the "Super Bowl of Swimming" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/26).

Buffalo Praised For NHL Draft Weekend; Scouting Combine Returning

Buffalo hosted this weekend's NHL Draft, and though there were questions about how the city "would handle having an event of this magnitude," one team exec was "strong with his praise of the event while throwing jabs at previous hosts." The anonymous exec said, "From top to bottom, everything about this year has been top notch. Compared to Florida last year, the layout and ease of access has been night and day.” The Sabres also "hosted a fanfest across the street from the First Niagara Center that showcased the newly revamped waterfront of the city" (THEHOCKEYWRITERS.com, 6/25). Downtown Buffalo had "never been as ready for primetime" as it was Friday for the Draft (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/25).

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at the start of the event Friday announced that the league's scouting combine "will be returning to Buffalo for another year." Bettman upon appearing was booed by fans in attendance, and it "lasted a little bit longer than usual, only ending once Bettman said a few nice words about the city." Sabres Owner Terry Pegula opened the Draft ceremonies Friday, noting if any visiting teams had any problems, "just call my wife [Kim]" (BUFFALO NEWS, 6/25).

Maple Leafs Expected To Gain Stability With Auston Matthews Selection

The Maple Leafs on Friday selected C Auston Matthews No. 1 overall in the NHL Draft, and the team now is "beginning to find stability" under the leadership of coach Mike Babcock, President Brendan Shanahan and GM Lou Lamoriello. Matthews "learned the game in a non-traditional fashion" in Scottsdale and is "expected to be an integral part" in moving the Leafs forward (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/25). Babcock said, "When you've been good for as long as he's been good, you get used to the spotlight. And you get used to delivering under pressure. But it's our job to insulate him, too" (TORONTO STAR, 6/25). The GLOBE & MAIL's James Mirtle: "How Auston Matthews Became Hockey's Hottest Prospect" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/21).

Jeff Gordon More Comfortable In Booth As Fox NASCAR Season Ends

Fox NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon is calling his final race of the season today with the Sprint Cup race at Sonoma Raceway, noting he is "a lot more confident and comfortable" in the booth than when the season began. Gordon "almost wishes NASCAR's television schedule wasn't shifting to NBC next week." Gordon: "I kind of know what to look for, what to ask for, and where I fit in better than I certainly did then." Meanwhile, Gordon is "open to succeeding Michael Strahan as Kelly Ripa's new 'Live' co-host." But he said his "priority is Fox and Fox Sports, and NASCAR." Gordon: "I am flattered that my name has been associated with that. ... I will definitely be back in the booth next year; if there was something that could fit into and around that, great" (AP, 6/25).

NASCAR, Microsoft Debuting New Competition-Focused App

By Adam Stern

NASCAR and Microsoft for today’s Sprint Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway are debuting a new competition-focused app that will streamline the sanctioning body’s race management system. The Race Management App, which is not consumer-facing to start and leverages Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Azure platforms, brings together six different aspects of NASCAR’s current race management system that previously were on different screens onto one app. Examples include pit-road officiating, weather tracking, timing/scoring and video replay. The app, which also will allow NASCAR to send teams video replays of pit-road penalties in a faster fashion, marks the next step in the sanctioning body’s quest to better manage the logistics around racing.

Microsoft, which entered the sport last year as an official partner of NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports, unveiled the app during a press conference Friday at SMI-owned Sonoma with Dir & Principal Evangelist of Sports Mike Downey plus NASCAR Exec VP & Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell. Today’s race at 3:00pm ET on FS1 is the last race of Fox Sports’ half of the season before NBC Sports takes over next weekend at Daytona.

U.S. Soccer's Fourth-Place Finish In Copa Seen As Step Forward

The U.S. men's national team last night lost 1-0 to Colombia in the third-place match of Copa America Centenario "in front of 29,041" at Univ. of Phoenix Stadium. The loss "secured a fourth-pace finish for the U.S. in the 100th anniversary" of the tournament (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/26). The U.S. "performed better overall than it did" in last week's 4-0 loss to Argentina in the semifinals. In the end, finishing fourth "was a heck of a lot better than the brutal fourth-place finish" in last year's CONCACAF Gold Cup (SI.com, 6/25).

The average asking price for tonight's Chile-Argentina championship match at MetLife Stadium "was $1,067.85" as of Friday morning, which "would make it the second most expensive ticket in the history of the stadium, behind only Super Bowl XLVIII at $2,567." The lowest asking price was $382, according to TipIQ.com (NEWSDAY, 6/25). The cheapest ticket on StubHub for tonight's game is $249 in the upper deck (THE DAILY).

Jamaican Sprinter Contracts Zika; Tennis Players Not Worried

Jamaican sprinter Kemar Bailey-Cole has "revealed that he is suffering from the Zika virus." Bailey-Cole "was in the running for a spot on Jamaica's sprint-relay team" at the Rio Games, but "now that's in doubt." Bailey-Cole said, "I didn't know I had the virus and I have been training with it for like three days now" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 6/25). Meanwhile, top tennis players "aren't put off" by the virus. Andy Murray said, "My plan is to still play." Roger Federer: "I'll put mosquito spray on my body and take the precautions I have to." Petra Kvitova: "I'm not afraid of Zika. I will definitely go there" (AP, 6/25).

Quick Hits....

But I don't think I would be wrong for using this as motivation" – Knicks G Derrick Rose, on his mindset after being traded from the Bulls (THECYCLE.media, 6/24).

Weekend Hot Reads....

The N.Y. TIMES' Joe Nocera noted as the Rio Games near, the host country is letting the "bad times roll." Cities that "hold Olympics rarely, if ever, break even on the Games." In Rio's case, it "won't even be close," as Brazil "originally budgeted" more than $14B to hold the Olympics. That number is now estimated at about $20B. Smith College economist Andrew Zimbalist said that Rio "is only likely to reap, at most," $4.5B in revenue. The Games "will go on, of course, and for those of us watching on television, it will be a splendid spectacle." But after the Games end, "most of us will move on," and the people of Rio "will be left to pick up the pieces."

The WASHINGTON POST's Neil Greenberg wrote under the header, "Analytics Come To The Fore In Golf Because Of Lasers." The PGA Tour is "revolutionizing the way players, their coaches and fans understand the sport."
