50,000-Plus Fans See What May Be American Pharoah's Last Race

The “roar of more than 50,000 people” accompanied Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s appearance at the Travers Stakes yesterday at Saratoga Race Course (N.Y. TIMES, 8/30). Ticket sales were “capped” by NYRA at 50,000 and “sold out more than two weeks in advance, even before it was announced that American Pharoah would compete.” Gates opened early, and fans “flowed in steadily until late afternoon, when most of the races had been run” (Albany TIMES UNION, 8/30). It was an “historic day” as the $1.6M purse was “the richest ever at Saratoga” (SARATOGIAN, 8/30).

For American Pharoah, which finished second to Keen Ice, Saratoga “might be the graveyard of his career.” Owner Ahmed Zayat said, “My gut feeling is to retire him” (ESPN.com, 8/29). Meanwhile, a crowd of 15,000 “flocked” to the track on Friday as NYRA “opened its gates free of charge to allow fans to watch” American Pharoah train (ESPN.com, 8/28).
