Eminem Makes "Awkward" Appearance During Notre Dame-Michigan

During halftime of ABC’s Notre Dame-Univ. of Michigan broadcast yesterday, musician Eminem joined announcers Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit in the broadcast booth. Beginning next week, Eminem will provide the intro to ABC's “Saturday Night Football.” At first appearing disoriented, Eminem after Musburger asked him about his new video, stood up straight and said, “Sorry. Live TV freaks me out a little bit.”

Before leaving the broadcast booth, Eminem told Musburger, “I have you on my fantasy announcer team. It would be you and the late, great Pat Summerall and John Madden and Al Michaels. If you guys would just get together and call a game – Kirk, you’re great, too.” Herbsreit laughed and said, “I’m not quite to that status yet.” Eminem: “Right. But you being a legend, if you got with Al Michael and John Madden and called just one Lions game – the Super Bowl probably would be great – man that would be a dream come true for me.” He added, “You are a legend, my friend.” Musburger responded: “You are the legend.” Musburger mentioned some of the musician’s accomplishments, to which Eminem said, “I’m really uncomfortable right now” (“Notre Dame-Michigan,” ABC, 9/7).

The media reaction to the interview was consistent, with CBSSPORTS.com’s Chip Patterson describing the interview as “somewhere between forced and unintentionally hilarious.” SI.com’s Zac Ellis wrote the interview provided “confusion, a minor sense of discomfort and a general feeling of ‘What exactly just happened?'” YAHOO SPORTS’ Nick Bromberg wrote it was “as awkward as you could imagine.” USATODAY.com’s Scott Gleason: “It was awkward. Real awkward.”
