Costa Rica To Protest World Cup Qualifier Loss In Snowy Denver

Costa Rica “promised to make an official protest” with FIFA about its 1-0 loss Friday to the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier. The game was played in the snow in front of a sellout crowd of 19,374 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver (REUTERS, 3/23). U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said that suspending the game “would have required both teams to resume play at the point of stoppage when the weather cleared.” But with snow and sub-freezing temperatures “forecast for much of the weekend, a suspension could have caused scheduling nightmares, because both countries have qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday" (L.A. TIMES, 3/24).
