Marquez KOs Pacquiao; Prospects Dim For A Mayweather Superfight?

Juan Manuel Marquez scored a “stunning sixth-round knockout victory” over Manny Pacquiao last night “before an electric crowd" of 16,348 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/9). Before the fight, Top Rank Chair Bob Arum said that the event “will generate a live gate of more than $10.5 million,” placing the fight 14th in Nevada history (ESPN.com, 12/7).
Pacquiao’s future in boxing "is uncertain" after the knockout (LAS VEGAS SUN, 12/9). It is “not out of the question” that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao could still fight, but “the bout will never have the kind of luster it had when they were 1-2 in the rankings” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 12/9).
