Taking Attendance: Cactus Bowl Hits Record Low At Chase Field

There were three college bowl games yesterday:

  • Kansas State beat UCLA in the Cactus Bowl in front of 32,859 fans at Chase Field, marking a record low for the event, which began as the Copper Bowl in '89 in Tucson. This is the second year in a row the game was played in downtown Phoenix after being in Tempe for just over a decade. There also was a Suns game last night next door at Talking Stick Resort Arena (THE DAILY).
  • It "didn't appear many fans decided to show up" for the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl yesterday afternoon for Utah-West Virginia. Weather "surely played a role in the low attendance," as it was "in the 30s and pretty cloudy" (FANBUZZ.com, 12/26). The crowd of 20,507 at the Cotton Bowl was down from 39,117 for Army-North Texas last year.
  • Duke beat Northern Illinois in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field "before an announced crowd of 20,252 fans" yesterday (DETROIT NEWS, 12/27). That figure is up from last year's record-low crowd of 19,117 for Boston College-Maryland.
