U.S. Soccer: Eight Presidential Candidates Submitted Required Noms

U.S. Soccer said that eight of the nine announced candidates to become its next president "submitted the required three nominations to be eligible to run for the post, but the federation declined to name those individuals because it had been unable to complete background checks for at least two of them." Former players Eric Wynalda, Kyle Martino, Paul Caligiuri and Hope Solo have "publicly declared that they had the required nominations," and Boston lawyer Steve Gans was reported to have his as well. USSF VP Carlos Cordeiro and SUM President Kathy Carter were "less public about their nominations," but it would be "improbable that they would have entered the race without the required support." The other declared candidates are New Jersey lawyer Michael Winograd and Massachusetts soccer official Paul Lapointe (N.Y. TIMES, 12/14).
