J.J. Watt, Jose Altuve Named SI Sportsperson Of The Year Winners

Last night’s edition of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” included the unveiling of Texans DE J.J. Watt and Astros 2B Jose Altuve as the the recipients of the '17 SI Sportsperson of the Year. Watt appeared on-stage with NBC's Jimmy Fallon and discussed his efforts to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief, recognizing "over 200,000 people who donated money to help rebuild the city." Watt: "It's an award that's so much bigger than sports.” Watt said his original goal was to raise $200,000 for hurricane relief, but he eventually raised over $37M, with Fallon himself donating $1M. Watt also talked about the inspiration and joy the Astros brought to Houston by winning the World Series: “Sports are so much bigger than just hitting a ball out of the park. You're literally lifting people's spirits and making them forget about what they're going through for that minute. ... Jose and the guys deserve so much credit for that.” Fallon: “We’re so thankful and happy that you exist. You’re awesome, buddy” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 12/4).
