Nine MLB Players Get Qualifying Offers Under New CBA Guidelines

Nine MLB players received a qualifying offer by yesterday’s 5:00pm ET deadline, down by one from last year. The offers this year are good for a one-year, $17.4M contract, up slightly from $17.2M last year. The players will have 10 days to decide whether to accept.

The offer value is still determined by the average of the top 125 MLB salaries. But after several years of debate, the new CBA involves new rules for qualifying offers. Prior rules involved teams forfeiting a first-round draft pick for signing a player receiving a qualifying offer from their previous club. But the new labor deal created a tiered system that slots compensatory draft picks depending on whether the player signs a contract worth at least $50M, whether the team losing the player receives revenue-sharing funds and whether the signing team pays luxury tax. Several teams including the Yankees, Dodgers and Nationals could also face reductions in their international signing pools for signing a player with a qualifying offer.
