La Russa Says His Call To Leave D-backs After Helping Hazen Regime

Tony La Russa yesterday said that it was "his decision to leave" the D-backs because the ballclub’s operations from the front office to the field "would function just fine without him." La Russa, who served this past season as an advisor after being Chief Baseball Officer from '15-16, said, "It’s not that I can’t contribute. It’s that they don’t need it. These guys are sharp." La Russa praised the team's front office led by Exec VP & GM Mike Hazen, and was "equally complimentary of manager Torey Lovullo." D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall said that La Russa recently "informed the club of his decision and that they wish him the best." The D-backs this year reached the playoffs for the first time since '11 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/19).
