Rising NASCAR Xfinity Series driver William Byron is expected to be named the next driver of Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 5 Chevy in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, according to sources. HMS announced yesterday that Kasey Kahne will not return to the organization after this season despite being signed through '18. He has missed the playoffs the last two seasons and went through a 102-race winless streak that ended last month. Sources said HMS could announce the move to elevate the 19-year-old Byron as soon as this week.

Sponsorship plans for Byron were unclear, but he has been sponsored primarily this season by Liberty Univ. (which he attends as a student) and Axalta. HMS last night declined comment. Byron has three wins this season in the Xfinity Series.
