IOC's Bach, President Trump May Discuss L.A. Bid At White House

IOC President Thomas Bach today is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House. Trump has "expressed his support" for L.A.'s Olympic bid – "including in a phone call with Mr. Bach before Mr. Trump's inauguration – but the two have not previously met in person" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/22). L.A. "will not be the primary topic of discussion" at the "informal meeting." Neither LA 2024 Chair Casey Wasserman, CEO Gene Sykes nor L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti will "attend the meeting." The three U.S. IOC members – Larry Probst, Anita DeFrantz and Angela Ruggiero – "will attend" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 6/22).

Sources: Cavaliers Offer Chauncey Billups Deal To Lead Basketball Ops

Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert has offered ESPN NBA analyst Chauncey Billups a five-year contract to serve as the team's President of Basketball Operations, but Billups has "yet to accept," according to sources. This comes after the "second consecutive day of meetings between Gilbert and Billups" (THEATHLETIC.com, 6/21). Sources close to the Cavs "expect Billups to eventually take the job" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 6/22). But other sources indicated that Billups is "conflicted about accepting" (ESPN.com, 6/22). Billups reportedly was "meeting with powerbrokers in and around the organization during the Finals" (CLEVELAND.com, 6/22).

NHL Pulls Off Dual Expansion Draft/Awards Event In Las Vegas

The NHL hosted both its annual awards and Expansion Draft last night in Las Vegas, and the "doubling down" effort "worked because the league brought in more than a dozen of the top 100 players to present the awards and paraded them on stage to start the show." Presenters included Hockey HOFers Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux, Bob Gainey and Denis Potvin. Avalanche G Calvin Pickard was the "first of the expansion players drafted" by the Golden Knights, and the "reality of just how many draft picks George McPhee managed to accumulate by agreeing to back off picking certain players began to add up" (EDMONTON SUN, 6/22).

Marcel Dionne Praises Aly Raisman's Figure During NHL Awards

U.S. gymnast Aly Raisman "endured an awkward moment on stage" during last night's NHL awards presentations after Hockey HOFer Marcel Dionne "complimented her legs." Raisman and Dionne were on stage together to present the Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play, and as part of their "pre-award patter, Dionne praised Raisman’s gymnastic success." He then "made a sweeping gesture toward Raisman, saying: 'Look at those legs!'" (AP, 6/22).

Maple Leafs blogger Jeff Veillette‏ tweeted, "I could do without the 'look at those legs' from Marcel Dionne to Aly Raisman and the whistles from the crowd. That was pretty bad." TSN Radio contributor Clint O'Neil: "Probably not the smartest thing for Marcel Dionne to say at the NHL Awards in these politically correct days!" Pittsburgh-based KDKA-FM's Colin Dunlap: "Dionne was complimenting Aly Raisman on being an in-shape, hard-working athlete and her body showing the results. Stop being offended."

KeyArena Roof Closer To Being Designated A Historical Landmark

KeyArena's "'iconic' roof is now one step closer to being designated a historical landmark" after Seattle's nine-member landmarks preservation board voted unanimously to "approve the venue being nominated for the status." The historical designation is "coming into play now" because of Oak View Group's proposed $564M renovation of the venue. OVG "had members present at Wednesday’s hearing." The nomination moves to a "designation hearing scheduled for Aug. 2." If it is approved, the board then will "confer with the city and OVG" to ensure renovations "meet preservation needs" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/22).

Travelers Championship Has Elite Field Featuring McIlroy, Spieth, Day

The PGA Tour Travelers Championship got underway today at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, where Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth will compete "for the first time." Jason Day "returns for the first time in three years, giving the tournament three players ranked in the top half-dozen in the world." The field could be helped by the PGA Tour last year instituting a rule that "players who don't play a minimum of 25 tournaments each season must compete in at least one event that they haven't played during the previous four seasons." As much as the players "need a less stressful week after the year's second major," the Travelers "needs the shot in the arm they provide for everything from ticket sales to television ratings to sponsor interest" (ESPN.com, 6/21).

U.S. Bank Stadium's Governing Body Mulls Changes To Oversight

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority today will "consider pay raises and new ethical standards" for U.S. Bank Stadium staff as it "begins to reshape oversight of the building." Among the proposed changes are "instituting a salary cap of $60,000 for the committee’s chairperson and hiring a project manager to oversee capital improvements." The $60,000 figure would be "less than half" of what Michele Kelm-Helgen was "paid at the end of her tenure" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 6/22).

Big Papi Being Honored In Boston With Comedy Roast, Street Renaming

Former MLBer David Ortiz tonight will be the "subject of a comedy roast at the House of Blues" in Boston, with roasters to include Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia and comedian Bill Burr. The event "will benefit Ortiz' Children's Fund" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/22). The city today "will get a head start on honoring Ortiz" when the "Yawkey Way Extension is renamed David Ortiz Drive" by Mayor Martin Walsh (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/22).

Meanwhile, Ortiz during an event last night in Providence, R.I., "voiced his support" for Triple-A Int'l League Pawtucket Red Sox Chair Larry Lucchino and "said that he has heard about a proposal for a new PawSox stadium." Ortiz: “I hope it comes true” (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 6/22).

Morning Hot Reads: Working Title

Tomorrow marks the 45th anniversary of Title IX, and USA TODAY's Christine Brennan writes, "For much of the 20th century, this nation made a huge mistake. It denied half of its population the opportunity to learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, physical fitness, confidence and winning and losing at a young age." But since President Nixon signed Title IX into law in '72 and, "to put it mildly, the law has become wildly successful."

Laugh Track: Swim Move

Comedy Central’s Trevor Noah said Michael Phelps will race a great white shark and asked, “Can Michael Phelps beat the shark? ... The answer is no, no. If a shark stops swimming, it literally dies. If Michael Phelps stops swimming, he's just a tall guy with weird arms. There’s no race. Like, this is just a stupid stunt. It's not a real race. If you really want to get me interested, you know what you do? Have the shark and Michael Phelps in the same water. No barrier, two great whites enter, only one will emerge. … Who knows, you may be surprised. Afterwards, people will be like, ‘Wow, I can't believe Michael Phelps ate the shark. Wow!’ My money is on the shark winning, mostly because this race is to promote ‘Shark Week,’ so this is like full pressure on the shark. It has to win. It can't lose to a human on ‘Shark Week.’ That would be so embarrassing. That would be like if LeBron got dunked on by Jeff Sessions during ‘Black History Month’” (“The Daily Show,” Comedy Central, 6/21).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon said of the Nationals hosting a "Game of Thrones" night, "It's a night where baseball fans and ‘Game of Thrones’ fans will look at each other and say, ‘I have no idea what's going on. I don't have any clue’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 6/21).
