SEC Spring Meetings To Address Alcohol Sales, TV Revenues

The SEC today begins its annual spring meetings in Destin, Fla., where all 14 member school presidents, ADs, head football coaches and head men's and women's basketball coaches "will attend some part of the four-day event" (Columbia STATE, 5/30). SEC leaders are "expected to continue discussion on expanding the sale of beer and alcohol in their stadiums." LSU has been on the "forefront of attempts to loosen SEC rules which currently limit alcoholic beverages to suite and club seat areas" (THEADVOCATE.com, 5/27). Revenue from CBS and ESPN is "still rolling in," but there are "signs the spigot might not sustain its current gush" (Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL, 5/30).

Also today, the AAC's spring meetings kick off in Key Biscayne, Fla. Commissioner Mike Aresco said that attendees are "going to talk about" increased venue security. He said of the conference's negotiations for TV deals, "Our rights fee is fairly modest right now and there’s a lot of room for growth there, but we’re providing this really valuable product. When you provide 17 or 18 or 19 Thursday, Friday games of the quality we provide as well as the other things we do, I think we’ll be attractive" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 5/30).
