Qualifying Offers Tendered To 10 MLB Players, At $17.2M Annually

Ten MLB players received a qualifying offer by yesterday's 5:00pm ET deadline, half the league-record number of 20 that were tendered one last year. The offers this year are good for a one-year, $17.2M contract, up from $15.8M in '15. The players will have a week to decide whether to accept. If they decline and sign with another team, the original club will receive a supplemental pick in the '17 Draft. The offer value is determined by the average of the top 125 MLB salaries. Free agents must have spent the entire season with one club to be eligible for a qualifying offer.

It is not yet known whether the qualifying offer concept will be retained in its current form in the next CBA, as MLBPA execs have expressed concern over the years about players’ free agent markets being adversely affected by the offers and attachment of draft pick compensation.
