Flyers Hold Emotional Ceremony Honoring Late Owner Ed Snider

A banner was "raised to the rafters" last night at Wells Fargo Center honoring late Flyers Owner Ed Snider before the team played its home opener against the Ducks. The Flyers "showed a tribute video on their 50-year history and Snider, who cofounded the team." Toward the end of the pregame festivities, photos of deceased Flyers -- or those connected to the franchise -- "were shown on the video screen." When photos of Snider were displayed, the fans "gave him a standing ovation" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/21).

The ceremony was "simple, and poignant, and passionate: everything Ed Snider was about." Snider's family watched as a banner honoring his tenure "that read 'Ed Snider: 1967-2016' was raised into the rafters, next to the banners for the two Stanley Cups he brought to Philadelphia." Some of Snider's grandchildren "were shown in his box," but one seat "was left empty" -- for Snider. Flyers C Claude Giroux said, "It was actually pretty emotional. He touched a lot of lives here in 50 years" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 10/21).

Meanwhile, Hockey HOFer Bobby Orr last night ushered 98-year-old former Bruin Milt Schmidt "onto the ice in his wheelchair for the ceremonial puck drop" against the Devils at TD Garden (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 10/21).
