Start Of NHL Season Gets Boost From Auston Matthews' Historic Debut

Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews, the No. 1 overall pick in the '16 NHL Draft, "authored one of the greatest maiden games in the league's history" last night, scoring four goals in his "dream debut" against the Senators. Nobody else has "scored four goals in their inaugural NHL appearance" since 1917 (TORONTO STAR, 10/13). NBC's "Today" teased a segment on Matthews' debut at the top of the show. Early in the program's second hour, anchor Savannah Guthrie said, "Remember that name. He made history last night." She added, "He's from Arizona. We're not exactly known for our ice hockey" ("Today," NBC, 10/13). While it is "important to temper expectations for a 19-year-old rookie," his four-goal performance was "a memorable way to start things off" (SI.com, 10/13).

The NHL's official store "does not have any Matthews jerseys ready to go, so if fans want to purchase one, they have to customize it" (ESPN.com, 10/12). Thousands of tickets "were available" for last night's game at Canadian Tire Centre as of yesterday afternoon, and there were "rows of empty seats in the upper deck" during the season opener (OTTAWA SUN, 10/13).

The Boston Globe's Bob Ryan during the game tweeted, "Auston Matthews has a hat trick? Only comparison I can think of is Juan Marichal one-hitter in his debut." Coyotes President & CEO Anthony LeBlanc: "So happy for @AM34 & his family. Tonight's other winner...AZ hockey. Let's keep growing the game. Another rink (or 2) being announced soon!" Panthers G Roberto Luongo tweeted, "I've just decided that Reims will play ALL of the games versus the leafs this year...... #Matthews."

Las Vegas Stadium Financing Bill Heads To Nevada Assembly

The Nevada legislature reconvenes today, with the Assembly to consider a bill that would help finance a domed NFL stadium in Las Vegas and convention center upgrades. The bill, already passed by the state Senate, needs 28 votes (a two-thirds majority) to "pass the lower house," but how it will be "received by the Republican-controlled Assembly is unclear." Assembly majority leader Paul Anderson said that lawmakers were "working toward a possible final vote for sometime" today. When asked if there were enough votes to secure passage, Anderson said, "I don't think I could answer that" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/13). The Assembly "can request additional amendments" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 10/13).

IBM To Supply WiFi Infrastructure At LAFC's New Stadium

By Don Muret and Eric Fisher

IBM has signed a deal with LAFC to supply technology services for Banc of California Stadium, the MLS expansion team’s $250M, 22,000-seat facility set to open in '18. As an official launch partner for the Gensler-designed venue, IBM will be responsible for wireless infrastructure, supplying a fiber-based network that will power the stadium’s WiFi for fan use and for stadium/security operations, as well as the backbone for digital signage and media distribution. IBM has similar deals at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field and the Falcons' upcoming Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

LAFC President and co-Owner Tom Penn said, “This partnership underscores our club’s commitment to leveraging innovation for a best-in-class fan experience.” Details of the agreement are not known, as the pact is to be formally announced today.

A Donald Trump-owned golf course, "no matter how beautiful and centrally located it might be, cannot play host to an event that is the crown jewel of a women's sport. ... Not after the awful things Trump has said about minorities, immigrants and women, culminating in the lewd and disgusting video made public last Friday" (USA TODAY, 10/13).

Meanwhile, Trump at a Florida rally "made light of the NFL concussion problem." After a woman passed out in the audience and regained consciousness, Trump said, "A little ding on the head, no, no, you can't play for the rest of the season."
