White House Hosting Roundtable Exploring Sports' Role On Climate

The White House Office of Science & Technology today will host a roundtable with the focus on sports' role in the climate. The roundtable takes place at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and runs from 1:00-4:00pm ET. Green Sports Alliance co-Founder & President Emeritus Allen Hershkowitz said that the idea is “to get the sports industry committed to addressing climate issues.” The White House reached out to Hershkowitz two months ago seeking guidance as it planned the event.

Hershkowitz said there has been “tremendous interest in energy efficiency” by North American sports leagues and teams, which are always “looking for ways to save money through efficiency.” He said the Heat saved $1.6M “because of energy efficiency enhancements” at AmericanAirlines Arena. Hershkowitz and an unnamed Cabinet member will address the attendees. Among those expected to attend is NHL Dir of Sustainability Omar Mitchell. Hershkowitz will contribute a column on the event in next week's SportsBusiness Journal.
