ESPN's Tom Jackson Not Likely To Return To "Sunday NFL Countdown"

Tom Jackson "likely will not return to ESPN’s 'Sunday NFL Countdown.'" A source said that Jackson "has been contemplating his TV future." Sources "could not confirm if ESPN brass wanted to remove Jackson from his 'Sunday Countdown' post and asked him to move to another platform." He "could be given a role on another ESPN NFL show." His departure would "mark a complete overhaul of the Sunday pregame show's team of analysts" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/26).

NFL, NFLPA Agree To Jointly Investigate Concussion Protocol Cases

By Daniel Kaplan

The NFL and NFLPA yesterday announced that they would jointly investigate potential violations of the league’s concussion protocol, with fines and draft-pick forfeitures possible. Each party will get one representative to investigate possible violations, and in the event of a split, a third party arbitrator will rule. Under the terms of the CBA, Commissioner Roger Goodell has final say in punishment.

The new ranges of punishment include a maximum $150,000 fine for first violation, a minimum $100,000 violation for second, and draft-pick forfeitures and higher fines if it is determined the violation occurred so the team could keep a player in for competitive reasons. The Rams last year appeared to violate the protocol when they left a clearly woozy QB Case Keenum in the game after his head was slammed into the turf.

Former NBAer Jason Collins spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last night alongside his brother, Warriors assistant coach Jarron Collins. Jason, who is openly gay, said, "Before I came out to the world on the cover of Sports Illustrated, I came out privately to the Clinton family. I knew they would accept me for who I was" (Mult., 7/26). Collins has known Hillary Clinton and her family "since he was a classmate of her daughter, Chelsea, at Stanford" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/26).

Twitter To Elaborate On Streaming Deals During Q2 Earnings Report

When Twitter reports its Q2 earnings today, it will have a chance to pitch a "new business strategy to its most vocal and important critic: Wall Street." Twitter "has been scooping up digital streaming rights from anyone who will hand them over" – that includes deals with the NBA and MLBAM. Today "will be the first time since Twitter announced a streaming deal with the NFL back in April that we’ll get a chance to hear its top executives explain why this plan will work." And the idea "might take some selling" (RECODE.net, 7/26).

NBA Kings Naming Street Outside New Arena After David Stern

The NBA Kings today will announce that they are "naming the street leading to the front door" of Golden 1 Center in honor of former NBA Commissioner David Stern, whose "persistent, decades-long efforts helped keep the franchise in Sacramento." The address of the new arena, to be submitted to the city today for approval, will be 500 David J. Stern Walk. That portion of the street "had previously been part of Downtown Plaza and has not been a public street for many years" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 7/26).

Jaguars Draw 15,000-Plus For "Pokemon Go" Event At Stadium

The Jaguars estimate that more than 15,000 people attended last night's "Pokemon Go" event at EverBank Field, "well above the 9,651 who registered on the team's website." The franchise is "saying it created the largest Poke adventure" in the U.S. Jaguars VP/Marketing & Digital Media Steve Ziff said, "We actually knew it would be big, but we didn't know how big it was going to get." The event was "such a success that there is already talk of doing it again soon – and hopefully getting Jaguars owner Shad Khan in on the hunt, too" (ESPN.com, 7/25). Hundreds of "Pokemon Go" players "stood in the Florida heat lined up for hours before the doors even opened" at the scheduled 6:00pm ET start time. Since the "turnout was so large, staff opened the doors" at 5:30pm to "get the line moving earlier" (FIRSTCOASTNEWS.com, 7/25).

Meanwhile, sources said that EverBank Financial, which signed a naming-rights deal for the stadium in '10, is "exploring a sale after receiving interest from a potential suitor" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/25).

Laugh Track: A RiverDog In The Fight

Actor Danny McBride appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night to promote his new show, HBO’s “Vice Principals.” McBride recounted how actor Bill Murray, an investor in the Single-A South Atlantic League Charleston RiverDogs, got the show to film in Charleston, S.C. McBride: “I sent him an e-mail. It was just, ‘We have this role. It won't take much time, but it would be amazing if you would participate in this.’ And he wrote back this message like, 'I would love to have a hard copy delivered to the RiverDogs baseball stadium tonight. I will leave six tickets at the box office for you.' I was like, ‘We have our marching orders, this is our shot.’ So we took a copy of the script, we put it in one of those like silver metal briefcases that cocaine deals are made with and thought that was a good way to deliver it to him. We went to the baseball game, and we’re walking up to the box where we're supposed to go. I get up there and something's off. ... I’m like, ‘What is this? Where's Bill at?’ They were like, ‘He's right out there,’ and they started putting a mic on me, micing me up and I’m like, ‘What have I walked into here?’ And I walked out and Bill was filming an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show.” Host Jimmy Kimmel asked, “You became part of the show?” McBride: “I filmed the show. They cut me out of it” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 7/25).
