Labor Issues Expected To Dominate MLB Owners Meetings In N.Y.

MLB owners today begin a two-day quarterly meeting in N.Y., again focused heavily on labor issues following their last such meeting in January. Collective bargaining negotiations with the MLBPA are underway in advance of the Dec. 1 expiration of the current five-year labor pact, and key issues on the table include revenue sharing, the sport’s drug policy, how teams acquire amateur talent and the player accrual of service time and other benefits. Owners this week also will continue to discuss ongoing efforts to bring in outside investors to help grow MLBAM’s BAM Tech unit, but a formal owner vote on a course of action is not expected.

After having guest appearances at recent owners meetings from ESPN President John Skipper, Turner Broadcasting President David Levy and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, today’s plenary session will include talks from political advisor and former Obama White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina and Republican political consultant and Chair of the America Rising PAC Matt Rhoades.
