MLS All-Stars Defeat Tottenham Hotspur Before Sellout Crowd

The MLS All-Stars last night defeated EPL club Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 before a "standing-room-only crowd of 18,671 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park" in Colorado. The All-Star roster was "essentially a U.S. national team side augmented by international stars" Kaka and David Villa, who scored the two goals (DENVER POST, 7/30). As a "marketing exercise," All-Star week "has become an important advertisement for the league." It is "about getting people to tune in and see how MLS has progressed" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/30).

Meanwhile, MLS last night made Premier Partnerships Founder & Chair Alan Rothenberg the inaugural recipient of an honor that bears his name. The Alan I. Rothenberg Legacy Award will be presented annually to an individual who has made contributions that have left a legacy on MLS. Rothenberg in the early and mid-'90s drove the launch of MLS, including securing Phil Anschutz, the Krafts and the Hunts as owners (MLS).
