NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Marred By Late Start, Crash At Finish

Last night's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 was scheduled to start at 8:08pm ET, but "persistent rains delayed the command to fire engines to 11:27pm" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 7/6). The green flag dropped at 11:42, "what is thought to be the latest start in NASCAR history." Twenty Air Titan dryers were dispatched at 9:23pm, and "they, along with 10 jet dryers, got the 2.5-mile track ready in two hours." The race "marked the debut for NBC Sports" under its new NASCAR media rights deal (USA TODAY, 7/6).

Most of the "estimated crowd of 30,000 were still around at the terrifying finish," which featured a Dale Earnhardt Jr. win and a "spectacular crash" featuring Austin Dillon (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 7/6). Driver Ryan Newman said, "NASCAR got what they wanted. That's the end of it. Cars getting airborne, unsafe drivers, same old stuff. They just don't listen" (USATODAY.com, 7/6).

One race fan posted footage of the wreck from the front rows of the stands.
