MLS, MLSPU Reach New CBA, Avoiding First Work Stoppage

By Ian Thomas

MLS and the MLSPU late last night announced that they had reached an agreement on terms of a new CBA. The new deal, which covers five years through the '19 season, ensures the league starts the season on time tomorrow. The deal will now allow for limited free agency based on age and experience, a first for MLS, as well as a raise to the minimum salary, the two most highly contested issues in the process. Further details on the agreement, as well as a press conference, are expected today, but the following are highlights of the agreement:

  • Free agency for players 28 years old or older, with at least eight years experience.
  • Player compensation through free agency is capped at fixed percentages based on former salary.
  • Minimum salary of $60,000, increased from the current minimum of $36,500.
  • Increase in overall team salary budget.

The company "blamed the loss on higher input costs, negative currency effects and goodwill impairment losses" of $86M, "largely related to the deterioration of the Russian ruble." adidas also registered a $91M loss "related to the sale of its Rockport unit." Q4 sales rose 6.5% to $5.5B (WSJ.com, 3/5).

Laugh Track....Shirt Off His Back

Former Russian and NHL player Viacheslav Fetisov appeared on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” last night to promote the new documentary, “Red Army,” about the USSR hockey team. Host Jon Stewart said, “Hockey in the '80s and '90s really did stand in for both our countries as a kind of proxy battle of ideologies. I think we were one and two in that proxy battle. Did you feel that pressure as well in Russia?” Fetisov: “Yes, we grow up to dream about playing in the Olympic Games and represent your country.” Stewart asked, “Are you worried we’re going back to those days of more poisonous rhetoric between the two countries?” Fetisov: “The world is so fragile … and I feel it’s not going well. We should build more bridges between our countries.” Stewart said, “The two of us of together not only share our athletic prowess, but what’s beautiful about this film, you understand the human quality of the people behind the system, underneath the system. It humanizes it in a way.” Stewart then asked Fetisov to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to appear on the show and said, “He doesn’t have to wear a shirt. He can do whatever he wants” (“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” Comedy Central, 3/4).
