Laugh Track....Fine Print

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart said, “Apparently Katy Perry is having is a concert on Sunday that will have some sort of athletic intro and outro. It’s the Super Bowl, that special time of year when the when the whole country comes together to watch dogs fall in love with horses." Stewart said when he found out Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch could have been fined $500,000 for not attending Media Day, “Are you (EXPLETIVE) kidding me? That’s ‘my company poured dioxin in a river’ money. How is it this guy is facing international drug cartel penalty money but the owners and commissioner of the league have no obligation to address stadium financing shenanigans or concussions or domestic violence policies?” Stewart said of the NFL possibly fining Lynch for wearing his Beast Mode hat at Media Day, "It’s just classic NFL to be more worried about what’s happening on top of the player’s head than the damage that’s going on inside it" (“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” Comedy Central, 1/29).

Last night’s edition of TBS’ “Conan” featured host Conan O’Brien playing “Mortal Combat X” with Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch and Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski. O’Brien said, “It is a well-known sports fact that every one of the past 48 Super Bowls were decided four days prior in a video game competition, every single one. It's a fact. It's on the internet” (“Conan,” TBS, 1/29).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said, “The average price of a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl this year is a record $4.5 million, which is a lot of money to sell pizza to people whose faces are already stuffed with pizza. A price tag of that magnitude raises a very meaningful question and that question is, ‘How is it even remotely possible that GoDaddy has $4.5 million?’ … Why would anyone pay $4.5 million when you can pay a guy six bucks an hour to spin a sign on literally any corner you want?” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/29).

Last night’s edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” aired video of various people confessing to being responsible for Deflategate, including famous Massachusetts natives Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and John Krasinski. Kimmel said, “I don’t know if these people are trying to protect Tom Brady or if they want attention or if they’re mentally ill, but already more than a half a dozen people have come forward and make of this what you will” ( “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/29).

CBS’ David Letterman began his monologue by saying, “How many of you are here so you won’t get fined?” Letterman: “The Super Bowl is this weekend. I think it’s on Sunday. You know Tom Brady – boy a lot of intrigue with the Patriots – Tom Brady has a cold now. Are you aware of this? The official sponsor of his cold is Nyquil. You know who I like is Bill Belichick. Do you like Bill Belichick? He reminds me of the guy in the hardware store who mixes the paint” (“Late Show,” CBS, 1/29).
